Youth Adult Partnerships
Training Jointly organized by EuroNGOs - IPPF EN - YouAct
20-23 March 2006
Dublin, Ireland
In the Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights NGO community many organisations strongly promote the rights of young people. This has many reasons. First of all, SRHR related issues are issues that are relevant for young people to a large extent. Sexuality education, access to contraception and the right to sexual integrity are examples (from a much longer list) of issues of high concern for young people. Furthermore, young people who don’t enjoy full respect for their sexual and reproductive rights often find themselves facing discrimination, risk of attracting sexually transmittable infections or risk for an unwanted pregnancy.
One of the most important missions for the SRHR community is to protect, support and promote young people’s sexual and reproductive health and rights. In order to be able to do so, another right of young people; the right to participation, needs protection, support and promotion. Actors within the SRHR community need to work with young people, not only for young people. This is common understanding within many organisations but some feel they lack the competence needed to involve young people.
IPPF-EN, YouAct and EuroNGOs took the initiative to organise a 4-day training for young people and adults, who are active in this field, to promote youth participation and give practical guidelines for implementing youth-adult partnerships within their organisations. This training had the purpose to build competence and pave way for a long-term process of strengthening youth involvement.
