EU News: European Commission’s Directorate -Generals for
Research and Innovation (DG RTD) and Development and Cooperation (DG DEVCO)
signal support for research into the infectious diseases of poverty
17 April – Brussels
During the “Innovation in Healthcare without Borders” conference co-organised
by DG RTD and DG DEVCO, both DGs expressed their support for the “Global
Report for Research on Infectious Diseases of Poverty” launched by the World
Health Organisation (WHO). Robert-Jan Smits, Director General of DG RTD,
underscored the EU’s responsibility to strengthen health care delivery and
research partnerships with developing countries such as the European
Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP). Elisabeth Feret,
Head of DEVCOS’ Education, Health, Research and Culture unit, stated that her
DG will carefully analyse the recommendations on research strategies stated
in the report and explore its possible consequences for DEVCO’s policies.
Poverty-related infectious diseases impose a heavy health and economic burden
on endemic countries and prevent attainment of MDG 5 on maternal health;
still, they seem likely to remain low on the agendas of many research donors.
